Meet the Instructors & Team

John-Oliver

John Oliver

Lead Instructor

John is a Professor of Computer Science at Cal Poly, SLO. His research background is in the dynamic field of computer architecture. Low-power embedded systems are particularly interesting, the design space requires innovative, elegant solutions. He’s also passionate about education pedagogy. John is a champion for improving pathways for students to enter into the field of computing. He strives to be a champion for equity in all aspects. Lastly, he dabbles in computer forensics and cybersecurity.

Paul-Hummel

Paul Hummel

Instructor

Paul teaches electrical and computer engineering at Cal Poly, focusing on digital design and embedded systems working with FPGAs and MCUs. His current research interests are with hardware accelerators for quantum secure encryption. Paul has worked with the Nationa lntegrated Cyber Education Research Center and Cyber Innovation Center to develop and run Cyber Discovery Camps for high school students at Louisiana Tech University.

Henry Danielson

Instructor

Mr. Danielson has expert knowledge in Cybersecurity/Computer Security and has obtained his Certified Information Systems Security Office (CISSO) in 2019. Henry helped pivot the state championship California Cybersecurity Challenge in 2020 to all virtual. His guidance and support was able to support Defcon’s Aerospace village At Defcon Safe mode 2020 by running the CCIC Mission Allenium Satellite challenge. One of Henry’s missions is to connect and create awareness for young people in cybersecurity.

Instructor

Jen Rushing teaches Computer Science and Making at Central Coast New Tech High, a project-based learning (PBL) high school in Nipomo. She is passionate about supporting girls along STEM pathways and providing all high school students with a safe space to take risks, make mistakes, and be curious about how things work. In addition to facilitating learning, she also has a sordid past of professional software development in the Bay Area and spent a magical summer working for NASA.

Sameera is a second year Computer Science major at Cal Poly, SLO! She lives in Seattle, Washington and is very excited to be in the sunny state this year! In her free time, she likes to hike, try new boba places, and go on drives with friends. She looks forward to spreading knowledge about cybersecurity to the next set of great minds.

Luke is a third year Computer Science major headed for Cal Poly SLO. He loved computer science as well as climbing both in the gym and outdoors. Luke is trying to develop himself into working with AI or other data related processes. In his free time he likes to do video editing as well as play video games.

Henry is a second year Computer Engineering student at Cal Poly SLO. He enjoys programming first and foremost, but also messes around with Linux and cybersecurity. He’s currently learning about AI and machine learning. In Henry’s free time he loves rock climbing, photography, hiking, and really anything that lets him get outside.

Brian is a third year Computer Engineering major at Cal Poly SLO. With everything being shifted to the internet now more than ever before, cybersecurity is extremely important and there is a bright future in internet safety. His goal is to help educate others so that we can make safe decisions on the internet. Outside of school, Brian enjoys playing basketball, tennis, spike ball, and gaming.

Camp Coordinator

Danielle Borrelli is the Operations Coordinator at the California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI) and the Program Lead for the Trafficking Investigations Hub (TIH). She develops and delivers training and technical resources that address the role of technology in recruiting and exploiting victims of human trafficking. Danielle also works with schools and businesses to provide training in human trafficking awareness. Danielle was recently named California Polytechnic State University’s Employee of the Year for 2018–19, SLO Tribune’s Top 20 under 40 for 2019 and Jordan Cunningham’s 35th District Woman of the Year."
