Game Player to Game Builder: Jacob Althen

B.S. Computer Science, 2026

What drew you to come work at the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI)?

Jacob’s high school computer science teacher introduced him to Henry Danielson, which eventually led to an internship and then a job at CCI during his freshman year. He officially started working with the CCI on September 20th.

What were you involved in before joining the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute, whether at Cal Poly or elsewhere?

Before working at CCI, Jacob was active in Cyber Club and participated in CyberPatriot, where he helped solve internet-related challenges. He also played tennis and baseball and was involved in mock trial for three years.

What interests you about cybersecurity or technology?

Jacob’s interest in technology began in fourth grade when he first learned how to type. He soon began coding, and his passion for tech has grown ever since.

What part of your role at Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute are you most eager to dive into, and why?

Jacob is particularly excited to contribute to the Rooms in Space Grand Challenge. While he has had limited experience so far, he’s eager to get more involved and make meaningful improvements that benefit the CCI.

How does the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute fit in your future career?

Jacob aspires to work in game or web development and sees his role at CCI as a strong foundation for that path. His dream job is to become a full-stack developer.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work or school that you think helps you in cybersecurity?

Outside of school, Jacob enjoys creating his own games and software. He frequently participates in game jams, which allow him to collaborate with community members and sharpen his technical skills.

What are you excited to work on or learn about with the CCI coming up in the future?

Jacob is looking forward to future developments in the Space Grand Challenge.
