From Roblox to Ethical Hacking: David Abrams’ Journey at Cal Poly CCI
B.S. Computer Science, 2026
What drew you to come work at the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI)?
David found out about the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute at a computing career fair. Before that, he wasn’t aware of it but thought the institute seemed both interesting and important. With a background in game design and cybersecurity—both of which he is passionate about—David was eager to learn more. He is also a game designer, having developed a Roblox game that has amassed 85 million plays.
What were you involved in before joining the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute, whether at Cal Poly or elsewhere?
Before joining the institute, David was involved in game design for Roblox and continued to work on games as a side project. He also participated in cybersecurity challenges, including Capture the Flag (CTF) games, and focused on his academic work. Additionally, he was an active member of the Cal Poly Cybersecurity Club.
What interests you about cybersecurity or technology?
Cybersecurity has "followed" David everywhere he has gone. He had to learn how to defend his games from attacks and hackers, which sparked his interest in the field. David has been involved in cybersecurity and game-related clubs throughout his life, including during high school.
What part of your role at Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute are you most eager to dive into, and why?
David is most excited to take on the role of programming lead for Unity-based cybersecurity challenges. He looks forward to contributing his cybersecurity skills to the game design aspect of the CCI Challenge. He is excited about how his two passions—game design and cybersecurity—are coming together in a fun and meaningful way.
How does the Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute fit in your future career?
David hopes to work with organizations like the NSA, NIST, or other government agencies in offensive hacking. He is particularly interested in ethical hacking and sees this experience as a valuable opportunity to learn more about the field and the world of cybersecurity.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work or school that you think helps you in cybersecurity?
Both of David’s parents are Air Force veterans, and he values the strong family context and discipline they instilled in him. This background has contributed to his work ethic and focus, which he believes helps him in his studies and in cybersecurity.
What are you excited to work on or learn about with the CCI coming up in the future?
David is excited to contribute in a meaningful way to the CCI’s mission, particularly in inspiring younger generations to explore the future of cyberspace and technology. He hopes to spread awareness about the cybersecurity industry and the broader tech field.
